KITCHEN ISLAND

Sintered stone kitchen island: size, thickness and edge planning

Short answer: for an island used for cooking and casual seating, 15 mm is the safer choice once the length passes 2.7 metres. Up to 2.4 metres, 12 mm is enough provided the whole surface sits on cabinets or a frame. One unbroken length is set by the slab formats: 1200x2400, 1200x2700, 900x2700 and 1600x3200 mm, so an island up to 3.2 metres can be cut without a joint. Cutting, edges and support are carried out by your fabricator.

Slab sizes come from the manufacturer specification; support and edge profile are set by your fabricator.

Why island length decides the slab

An island is usually the longest surface in a kitchen, so slab formats decide how many joints end up on show. A 1200x2400 mm slab covers an island up to 2.4 metres in one piece, a 1200x2700 mm slab adds another 30 cm, and the 1600x3200 mm slab allows a full 3.2 metres. Past 3.2 metres a joint cannot be avoided, so its position is worth fixing before cutting.

Width, offcuts and vein direction

Slab widths are 900, 1200 and 1600 mm. Offcuts can still become a splashback, a shelf or a wall panel if the sizes are worked out before cutting, so one large slab often beats two small ones. Vein direction belongs in the same decision. On a pattern with a long vein, joints that do not line up make the pieces read as different materials. On a more even pattern, joints are far easier to hide.

Edges: straight, doubled or waterfall

The edge is what people see, since it faces the room. A straight profile reads light, while a doubled or mitred edge makes 12 mm and 15 mm read thicker without adding weight. A waterfall drops the same surface to the floor at both ends, so the cabinets disappear and the island reads as one block. All three are fabricated, so the profile must be agreed before cutting.

Support and the seating overhang

An island that sits fully on cabinets carries its load evenly. A seating overhang is different: there is no cabinet underneath, so the load is carried by a bracket or frame fixed back to the floor or wall structure. That decision sits with your fabricator or contractor: it depends on overhang length, cabinet type and slab weight. Settle it during measurement, not after the slab arrives on site.

Sinks, hobs and cut-outs

Every sink and hob opening removes surface that carries load, so positions need planning. Ideally no cut-out sits directly on a joint line. Where the layout forces the two close together, the fabricator can add reinforcement underneath. Cut-out positions and pipe routes should be on the shop drawing before cutting.

Pattern and finish

An island is seen from several angles, so vein character shows more than on cabinets. Jade, Italian, Luxury and Translucent each carry a different vein, and bright reflects more light while matte shows fewer marks. The material is rated to 1,200 degrees Celsius, water absorption is below 0.2 percent, and bookmatched pairs carry a 1 cm joint tolerance.

What to bring when ordering

Bring the finished dimensions: length, width, height, sink and hob positions, and the edge profile you want, plus whether there is a seating overhang and on which side. From those figures we prepare the slab quantity and mark which slab has a vein suited to the main face. Price and delivery are quoted per project: both depend on pattern, thickness, slab quantity and schedule.

Questions

What thickness for a three metre sintered stone island?

For a three metre island we recommend 15 mm, and that length can still be cut without a joint from a 1600x3200 mm slab. Support is calculated by your fabricator.

Can a three metre island be made without a joint?

Yes. A 1600x3200 mm slab covers one surface up to 3.2 metres. If the width exceeds 1600 mm, a lengthwise joint has to be planned.

Does a seating overhang need extra support?

Yes. There is no cabinet under it, so the fabricator usually fixes a bracket or frame back to the floor or wall. The form and size are decided by the fabricator.

Can a sink cut-out sit on a joint line?

Better not. Where the layout puts them close together, the fabricator can add reinforcement underneath. Positions belong on the shop drawing.

How much does a sintered stone island cost?

We do not publish a fixed price per square metre. Price depends on the pattern, thickness, slab quantity and project schedule, and is quoted once the dimensions and pattern are agreed.
