Sintered stone thickness for a kitchen worktop: 12 mm or 15 mm?
Short answer: 12 mm is enough for a standard kitchen worktop. For a large island, around three metres, we recommend 15 mm so the edge reads solid. The 20 mm option exists only in 1220x2700 mm and is intended for heavy duty use. The supporting structure is decided by your fabricator.
| Thickness | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 12 mm | Standard kitchen worktops, counters, work surfaces | Most common choice for home kitchens |
| 15 mm | Large islands, long tables, focal-point surfaces | Edge feels thicker and more solid |
| 20 mm | Heavy duty, commercial tables | Only available in 1220x2700 mm |
| 6 mm / 9 mm | Walls, splashbacks, furniture fronts | Not for work surfaces |
Figures come from the manufacturer specification. Support requirements are set by your fabricator or contractor.
Why 12 mm is enough for a home kitchen
Sintered stone is pressed at high temperature, so strength does not depend on thickness the way resin-based materials do. With correct support from the fabricator, 12 mm handles everyday kitchen use: cutting, hot pans and washing. It is also lighter, which makes it easier to fit onto existing cabinets.
When to move up to 15 mm
If the island is the centre of the room, or runs beyond two metres, 15 mm gives a thicker edge and reduces the chance of the edge looking thin after profiling. For a table that stands without cabinets underneath, 15 mm also reads better.
What to prepare before ordering
Bring the shop drawing or final dimensions: length, width, sink position and the edge profile you want. From that we calculate slab quantity and joint positions. If the pattern has a long vein, joints need planning up front so the vein continues across them.
When 6 mm and 9 mm are the better call
For walls, splashbacks and cabinet fronts, 6 mm and 9 mm make more sense: less weight, no load to carry. Many renovation projects use 6 mm on walls over the existing surface without stripping it back. The rule stays the same though: work surfaces such as kitchen worktops and dining tables are better at 12 mm and above.
Looking after a work surface
Sintered stone does not need routine sealing because water absorption is below 0.2 percent. Soap and a soft cloth are enough. Avoid harsh abrasives on matte surfaces, since they can change the gloss where they are rubbed. For stubborn marks such as ink or oil, ordinary household cleaner followed by a rinse is sufficient.
Common mistakes
The first is choosing a thickness before the final dimensions are clear. When the size changes mid-process, slab quantity and joint positions change with it, and the offcuts cannot be reused. The second is ordering slabs without planning vein direction across joints. On a long table, unplanned veins read as two different surfaces. The third is assuming a thin edge always looks cheap. With the right profile, 12 mm can read as thick as 20 mm without the extra weight.
How we help before cutting
At the Kapuk gallery the slabs stand at full size. You can compare 12 mm and 15 mm on the same surface, look at a profiled edge, and judge vein direction on the slab that will actually be cut. Once the dimensions and pattern are agreed, we prepare the slab quantity and delivery schedule for your project.
Questions
Is 12 mm enough for a three metre kitchen island?
For a three metre island we recommend 15 mm, especially when the island is a focal point and the edge is visible. The support structure is calculated by your fabricator.
Can 12 mm sintered stone take heat?
The material is rated to 1,200 degrees Celsius, so hot pans are not an issue. Using a trivet is still normal kitchen practice.
Is an extra support board needed?
For long spans, or tables without cabinets underneath, fabricators usually add a frame. The structural decision sits with your fabricator or contractor.
Can a 12 mm edge look as thick as 20 mm?
Yes, with a mitred or doubled edge profile done by the fabricator. It is a common way to get a thick look without extra weight.
Where can I compare 12 mm and 15 mm in person?
At the Kapuk gallery in Jakarta Barat, where both thicknesses are shown at full size. Open daily 10:00-18:00 WIB.
