Where 12 mm is specified
Kitchen worktops and islands, table tops, vanity tops, bar counters and wall panels where a thicker edge is wanted. A mitred edge builds the apparent thickness to 20 mm or 40 mm without the weight of a solid 20 mm slab.
Fabrication notes
Cut-outs for sinks and hobs are made before delivery. Edge profiles are polished at the fabricator. Long spans over 2.4 m should be supported according to the substrate and cabinet layout, and cantilevered sections need a support detail agreed with the installer.
Why not thinner for worktops
6 mm and 9 mm are intended for vertical surfaces and furniture fronts, where impact and point loading are low. On a worktop, the slab carries point loads from appliances and the edge takes knocks, which is why 12 mm is the practical minimum.
